LONGING FOR LONGING / Wan-Yen Hsieh

“LONGING FOR LONGING” is a solo exhibition of the Taiwanese artist Wan-Yen Hsieh. She was born in Taiwan, studied Chinese Literature at the National Taiwan University in Taipei, and Fine Arts at the University Carl von Ossietzky in the 90s in Olderburg, Germany, and has been living since 2005 in Norden-City, on the Nordsee coast.

There are in total five series of paintings and photographs to be seen in this exhibition.

Hsieh’s paintings present one side of an exactly constructed geometry and the other side a free abstraction. Her longing for something uncertain could be perceived in both trends of her works. “COLOURFUL HAIKUS”, “SPACETIME” and “LONGING FOR LONGING” are the three series of paintings.

“I paint, therefore I see, and in order to see the unpainted. Each painting extends a short stroke on the timeline of my life. Most of the things I paint area spaces, without people or objects, without a specific time or light source. Like a dream swaying between wakefulness and sleep, searching for beauty, poetry, and a way out.

“Longing for longing. Therefore I paint.” – Wan-Yen Hsieh

One of the two photography series is patchwork-serie, which shows collage works based on tiny objects and the other one contains black-white photographs, mostly people in ordinary life.

It’s still to be mentioned: there are Haikus written down by Hsieh, which are attached to each painting of the “COLOURFUL HAIKUS” Series 2020-23. Accompanied by this series is a book, published that will also be presented.
